Pasquel and his Farm in El Cacique

This is Pasquel. He is a farmer here in El Cacique. He rents land from a friend and grows plantains, sweet potatoes, yucca, potatoes, corn, and papaya. He sells his produce on the streets of Haina (a close suburb of la Ciudad...The capital city, Santo Domingo) and at times heads to the city streets to earn a living. Most of his produce is given to hungry families in his community. At times, they will work in the feild to "pay" for the food.

There is a clear hazard to farming here... the foreground in the farm and the background is obvious. I can only imagine the anmount of contamination and pollution/poison the water runoff from the dump creates. I thought twice about eating anything fresh for a few days.
